Honda FCX Concept

The FCX concept is Honda's latest take on fuel cells. Although its ultra-cab-forward body looks dramatically long, low, and wide, at 186 inches (15.5 feet) in overall length, the FCX is actually shorter than the Acura RL. It features a compact, Honda-developed fuel-cell stack in the middle of the car with two hydrogen tanks in the rear. The stack is actually much smaller than is now technologically feasible, but Honda says that it shows "our dream." (more)

GM Sequel Hydrogen Car

General Motors CEO Rick Wagoner says this hydrogen fuel-cell sport/ute is a sequel to the automobile industry's first 100 years. With the concept, GM says it has broken the 300-mile range barrier between fill-ups, all in a five-seat all-wheel-drive ute that goes 0 to 60 mph in about nine seconds. GM says the Sequel means the company is on target to offer a production fuel-cell car by 2010. (more)

GM HyWire Hydrogen Car

Larry Burns, GM's vice president of research and development and planning, said, "We are driving to have compelling and affordable fuel cell vehicles on the road by the end of the decade. With Hy-wire, we have taken the technology as it exists today and packaged it into an innovative drivable vehicle comparable in size and weight to today's luxury automobiles. (more)

GM Equniox Hydrogen Car

GM claims the Equinox FCV is the most capable vehicle of its kind. The four-seat crossover is designed to last for 50,000 miles, more than any rival FCV to date, and be useable in sub-zero temperatures, a long-standing problem for fuel cell propulsion systems. The fuel cell stack in the Equinox is GM's own design and will be built at the company's advanced technology center in Honeoye Falls, N.Y., while the vehicle itself will be produced at GM's Oshawa,Ontario plant. Ford Focus Hydrogen Car

The Focus FCV combines high fuel economy, performance, and comfort with desirable electric vehicle attributes such as improved noise, vibration, and harshness, and zero emissions. The four-door Focus was modified slightly for packaging the hydrogen fuel cell components. (more)

Toyota FCHV Hydrogen Car

Built on the Highlander model, the FCHV has comfortable seating for four, plus cargo storage in back. Two hydrogen tanks sit just in front of the rear wheels, with two more behind. Toyota includes hydrogen and collision sensors around the vehicle that triggers the tank valves to close if either a leak or an accident is detected. Toyota calls the FCHV a hybrid vehicle because it uses a heavily modified version of the Synergy system also found in its line of gas-electric cars. In the FCHV, Toyota replaces the gas engine with a fuel cell stack and the gas tank with hydrogen storage tanks. The system retains the central storage battery, the electric drive motor, the power control unit, and the regenerative braking of the Synergy system. (more)

Hyundai Tuscon Hydrogen Car

Hyundai’s second-generation fuel cell vehicle is dramatically improved in almost every way. The Tucson FCEV has a driving range double that of Hyundai's first-generation vehicle, the Santa Fe FCEV. Maximum speed and power have both increased to improve the overall performance. In a major technology breakthrough, the Tucson FCEV is one of the first fuel cell vehicles capable of starting in freezing temperatures. Testing has proven that the vehicle is capable of starting after being subjected to -20 degrees Celsius temperatures for five days. Other technical advancements include a higher output fuel cell and a new lithium ion polymer battery. (more)

Mazda Premacy Hydrogen RE Hybrid

A hydrogen car fueled by either gasoline or hydrogen and hooked to an electric motor in a hybrid powertrain. The rotary engine and hybrid unit are in front of the front axle. The gasoline tank and a high-voltage nickel hydride battery are under the second row of seats. A high-pressure hydrogen tank fits behind that second row of seats. Mazda says it is aiming for a cruising range of 124 miles on hydrogen fuel. Importantly, this car's hybrid system is being designed by Mazda, meaning Mazda is not tied to the Toyota system and its suppliers. (more)

ECD Toyota Prius Hydrogen Hybrid

The blue-on-white hydrogen hybrid graphics draw attention to mechanical changes underneath: a solid hydrogen storage system, retrofitted turbocharger, gaseous fuel delivery system, plus modified ignition and fuel metering software. But despite all the in-your-face advertising, this vehicle is all about transparency, at least in the eyes of future consumers. (more)

Daimler Chrysler Mercedes F-Cell

The car does 0-62mph in a respectable 13.4sec, has a top speed of 100 mph and comes with satellite navigation, air-conditioning and a CD player. DaimlerChrysler has a small fleet of A-class emonstrators and it’s working on a more powerful version of the system for a Mercedes B-class. It has already spent €1 billion (about £678m) on development, a huge vote of confidence in the technology. (more)

DaimlerChrysler Mercedes F600 Hygenius

According to Mercedes, the fuel cell used in the new vehicle, apart from providing clean energy for the car, can also serve as a mobile power source with the 66 KW of electric power sufficient to keep "several detached houses supplied with power". The Mercedes F600 Hygenius is powered by a zero-emission fuel cell drive with an output of 85KW/115 hp, using only 2.9 litres per 100 km with a range of 400 km.

The fuel cell in the Hygenius is about 40 percent more compact than in previous models and is notable for its good cold-start characteristics. It generates a constant power output of 60KW/82 hp and a torque of 250 Newton metres. Surplus energy is stored in a lithium-ion battery. An electric motor doubles as a generator that charges the battery during vehicle braking by recuperating drive energy.

Suzuki Ionis

Suzuki Motor Corp. is putting partner General Motors Corp.'s fuel-cell technology to work in the Ionis concept, a four-seat minivan that rides on a 96.5-inch wheelbase. The Ionis has four hydrogen tanks under the floor and uses steer- and brake-by-wire systems with electric motors at each wheel. The cabin puts a premium on flexibility, with a driver seat that can be moved from side to side or to the center to allow for more room when no front-seat passenger is there. The Ionis takes some styling risks that set it apart from conventional minivans, such as headlamps integrated into the windshield.

Nissan X-Trail

The Nissan X-Trail FCV is a high-pressured hydrogen-powered vehicle that delivers clean power, without noxious emissions. It employs elements of a variety of technologies, including electric vehicle (EV), hybrid electric vehicle (HEV), and compressed natural gas vehicle (CNGV) technology. It is equipped with a compact, high-performance lithium-ion battery pack, already being used on the Nissan Hypermini electric vehicle and other alternative fuel vehicles, powering a Super Motor. Peugeot 207 CC

The Peugeot 207 CC combines an electric motor (which takes its power from a lithium-ion battery) and a GENEPAC 20 hydrogen fuel cell. With both units operating at their full capacity, the Epure has a maximum power output equivalent to around 120bhp - a little more than the 110bhp produced by Peugeot's 1.6-litre HDI turbo diesel engine. Quantum Aggressor Hydrogen Military Vehicle

The Quantum AMVTM (Alternative Mobility Vehicle), nicknamed the “Aggressor,” couples a 10 kW (13.5 hp) fuel cell with a 60 kW (80.5 hp) battery in a parallel hybrid configuration, powering a high-torque (1,681 ft-lbs or 2,280 Nm) electric motor driving the rear wheels. Preliminary tests show an acceleration from 0 to 60 kmh (37 mph) in less than 4 seconds, and a top speed of 120 kmh (75 mph). Quantum’s electronic control system imposes torque and speed limits on the drivetrain to enhance traction and safety. (more)
