FuelCellStocks.Com Energy Conversion Devices
Energy Conversion Devices ECD was founded in 1960 by inventors and scientists Stan and Iris Ovshinsky, who understood that hydrogen was the future of energy. They built a company focused on three areas: Clean energy production, energy storage, and information technology. Today its President and CEO is Robert Stempel, the former CEO of General Motors. It has joint ventures with Intel, ChevronTexaco, STMicroelectronics, and BAE Systems and licensing agreements with Sony, Matsushita Electric, Pioneer, Ricoh, Toshiba, TDK, and Hitachi. In the past 40-plus years, ECD has offered technological solutions tapping the energy of the sun and of hydrogen. It created products for the generation, storage and transportation of clean energy. ECD's photovoltaic materials, fuel cells, nickel metalhydride batteries, magnesium-based hydrogen storage devices and other products are now used by the automotive, construction, energy-generation and electric equipment industries. ECD's products include solar roofing panels, compact high-power-density batteries and metal-hydride storage tanks for hydrogen for the cars and trucks in the future. Applications include homes, buildings, hybrid-electric cars, battery-driven electric vehicles, and hydrogen-powered electric vehicles. ECD and its partners also make stainless steel-intensive solar energy conversion panels for satellite communications systems that, among other things, provide high-speed, access to Internet and other telecommunications systems. Solar energy production: Ovonic™ UNI-SOLAR® thin film photovoltaic products are flexible, substantially lighter and more rugged than traditional solar cells. There is no ugly apparatus built on top of your roof. The photo volataic film is built right into the shingles on your roof, collecting sunlight and producing electicity. The photovolaic film is produced withougt cadium and is 100% environmentally friendly. Fuel cells: Ovonic Regenerative Fuel Cell™ technology is being developed for commercial use in a full range of stationary and portable power applications. The Ovonic Regenerative Fuel Cell utilizes proprietary metal hydride materials based on the principles of disordered materials pioneered and invented by Stanford R. Ovshinsky. These materials are derived from the same class of metal hydrides that have revolutionized the battery world in Ovonic nickel-metal hydride batteries, first in consumer applications where over $1B are sold per year, and more recently as the battery of choice in the rapidly emerging hybrid electric vehicle market. Similar Ovonic metal hydride alloys have also demonstrated a practical solution to the hydrogen storage problem for the emerging distributed generation market and hydrogen-powered vehicles that the auto industry had once considered to be years away. The revolutionary Ovonic Regenerative Fuel Cell technology is novel and has the potential for being a practical power solution for many applications, including portable power, transportation and propulsion, power backup, and emergency power. ECD Ovonics holds more than 350 U.S. patents and more than 800 foreign patents covering basic material compositions, product applications, and manufacturing processes. These patents, coupled with more than forty years of accumulated background know-how in the field, represent powerful intellectual assets that form the basis for ECD Ovonics' many licensing agreements and manufacturing and commercialization alliances.
