Aug 2004 -- Cobasys introduces a complete line of advanced nickel metal hydride (NiMH) based NiMHax® Battery Packs for all vehicles. The NiMHax packs range from 144 volts and 30 kW for light duty automotive applications to 672 volts and 280 kW for trucks and buses. The NiMHax standard pack solutions are designed to be plug-and-play units which include battery management systems (BMS), thermal management, hardware, software, packaging and all components necessary to completely integrate these packs into hybrid vehicle applications. Aug 2004 -- United Solar Ovonic received an additional order of 750 kW of photovoltaic products from Alwitra GmbH & Co. of Germany, which increases the total planned shipment to Alwitra to 1.5 MW in 2004. Aug 2004 -- United Solar Ovonic was tapped by the Brentwood School District to provide Building-Integrated Photovoltaic (BIPV) roofing. The 33 kW roof and energy system will put power back into the grid for the district's new Pioneer Elementary School. Aug 2004 -- Implemented a business restructuring plan to take full advantage of the favorable battery settlement agreement announced on July 7, 2004 and the increasing market interest in solar energy systems and hybrid electric vehicles. The plan accelerates the company's transition to an organization focused on commercializing its products and technologies by concentrating on the activities of its joint venture companies and its subsidiary United Solar Ovonic with the goal to move the company into a position of having sustained profitability by July 2006. July 2004 -- ECD and COBASYS LLC settled with Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd., Panasonic EV Energy Co., Ltd., and Toyota Motor Corporation about patent infringement disputes and counterclaims involving nickel metal hydride (NiMH) batteries before the International Chamber of Commerce, International Court of Arbitration. No party admitted any liability. COBASYS and PEVE will cross license each other for current and future patents to avoid possible future litigation. COBASYS and PEVE have agreed to a technical cooperation agreement and have also established a joint development program to collaborate on the development of next-generation high performance NiMH batteries for HEVs. June 2004 -- United Solar Ovonic LLC will provide a 300kW solar photovoltaic (PV) system for the Beijing New Capital Museum. The contract was signed in conjunction with a mission to China led by U.S. Secretary of Commerce Donald Evans. May 2004 -- United Solar Ovonic Corp. announced the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) in Kirtland AFB, New Mexico, has awarded Uni-Solar Ovonic a $4.45 million, 18-month contract to develop new solar cell technology to be used in space and airship vehicles addressing defense and homeland security applications. May 2004 -- United Solar Ovonic LLC shipped 500 kW of its flexible thin-film solar products to Solar Integrated Technologies , a Los Angeles-based manufacturer of integrated flexible photovoltaic roofing systems for commercial and industrial buildings. The shipment is part of the first 2.4 MW order placed by SIT. SIT is expected to purchase more than 5 MW of the Uni-Solar products in 2004 to address its rapidly expanding customer base. May 2004 -- United Solar Ovonic Corp. selected by the Air Force Research Laboratory in Kirtland AFB, New Mexico, to provide 3 kW of UNI-SOLAR® lightweight solar cells deposited on thin stainless steel to supply power to an experimental satellite. Uni-Solar Ovonic also has an option to provide an additional 300 W of UNI-SOLAR® ultra-lightweight cells deposited on polymer. April 2004 -- Texaco Ovonic Hydrogen Systems LLC is collaborating with Dynetek Industries Ltd. a leader in developing, producing and marketing lightweight compressed natural gas storage cylinders and compressed hydrogen storage cylinders, to design and co-develop a vessel for TOHS' metal hydride storage system. TOHS developed the heat exchanger and the metal hydride material and Dynetek developed the lightweight high-pressure vessel into which the heat exchanger is installed and filled with metal hydride. “ April 2004 -- United Solar Ovonic LLC entered into an agreement with Solar Integrated Technologies of Los Angeles to expand their strategic alliance formed in January 2003. SIT has certain exclusive rights to utilize UNI-SOLAR® flexible solar electric laminates for integration with single-ply roofing membranes for commercial, institutional and industrial buildings in North America. Additionally, SIT is expected to purchase more than 5MW of the UNI-SOLAR® products in 2004 to address its rapidly expanding customer base. April 2004 -- Texaco Ovonic Hydrogen Systems LLC demonstratesthe use of its Ovonic® metal-hydride hydrogen storage system in a modified hydrogen-electric hybrid Toyota Prius. April 2004 -- Election of three new, independent directors to its Board, increasing the number of independent directors to seven. The ECD Ovonics Board is now comprised of 10 members, including three inside directors. The new directors, Robert I. Frey, William J. Ketelhut and Stephen Rabinowitz, have strong track records o with major corporations and extensive experience in finance, technology, manufacturing and engineering. April 2004 -- Texaco Ovonic Hydrogen Systems LLC announced that the US Department of Transportation has approved the transport of hydrogen in metal hydride storage systems developed by TOHS for portable applications. March 2004 -- Texaco Ovonic Battery Systems LLC announced today it has changed its name to COBASYS. The name change reflects the company's focus in the expanding fields for Nickel Metal Hydride storage solutions in both the transportation and stationary power markets. COBASYS is a joint venture between Texaco Energy Systems L.L.C., a unit of ChevronTexaco Technology Ventures LLC, and a unit of Energy Conversion Devices, Inc., the pioneer in the development of high power, high energy NiMH batteries. March 2004 -- Awarded a contract by Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) to develop and deliver solar cells on polymer substrates. These solar cells will be used by Lockheed Martin in Phase 2 of the High Altitude Airship (HAA) program, awarded by the Missile Defense Agency in September 2003. March 2004 -- Successfully modified a commercial gasoline/electric hybrid vehicle to run on hydrogen utilizing a new low-pressure, metal hydride hydrogen storage system developed and manufactured by Texaco Ovonic Hydrogen Systems, LLC, a joint venture between a unit of ChevronTexaco Corp and ECD Ovonics. March 2004 -- United Solar Ovonic LLC received an order for 1.25 MW of photovoltaic panels from Sunset Energietechnik GmbH (Sunset) of Germany. Sunset has also signed a letter of intent to purchase 5 MW of UNI-SOLAR® products over the next 24 months. The products will be used by Sunset to address Germany's expanding grid-connected PV market. Feb 2004 -- United Solar Ovonic received an order for 1 MW of photovoltaic panels from ThyssenKrupp Hoesch Bausysteme GmbH . The products will be used by Thyssen to address the expanding building-integrated PV market in Germany. 500 kW has already been shipped, and the balance will be shipped before April 2004 Feb 2004 -- Announced that Stanford R. Ovshinsky, Iris M. Ovshinsky, Robert C. Stempel, Umberto Colombo, Walter J. McCarthy, Jr., Florence I. Metz and Stanley K. Stynes, all of whom are current directors, have been nominated by the Compensation and Nominating Committee for election to the Board of Directors at the Annual Meeting of Stockholders to be held on March 18, 2004. Jan 2004 -- Closed the sale for $5,592,922 of 573,339 units of its securities at a price per unit of $9.755. Each unit consists of one share of ECD Common Stock and one warrant to purchase one share of ECD Common Stock for $13.96 if exercised on or prior to May 2, 2005, and for $16.03 if exercised at any time thereafter, but prior to October 31, 2006. The investors purchasing the units had participated in the previously announced sale of $27.8 million of ECD Ovonics securities in November 2003. Jan 2004 -- HaveBlue LLC announced today that it reached an agreement with Texaco Ovonic Hydrogen Systems LLC that calls for the company to provide the developmental metal hydride hydrogen storage system for HaveBlue's X/V-1 marine hydrogen fuel technology demonstration vessel. The first of its kind, the X/V-1 is a modified Catalina 42 mk II provided by program sponsor Catalina Yachts that will utilize hydrogen energy produced through renewable resources to economically deliver all required power and propulsion. Oct 2003 -- Awarded the first phase of funding in a $500,000 contract from the U.S. Army Tank-Automotive and Armaments Command (TACOM) to partner with the Army's National Automotive Center (NAC) in the development by Texaco Ovonic Hydrogen Systems (TOHS) of a transportable solid hydrogen storage and refueling system for hydrogen fuel cell-powered, off-road military vehicles. Oct 2003 -- Received $200,280 in funding from California's South Coast Air Quality Management District for a project that will involve the demonstration of "a fuel system that allows for portable, low-pressure, solid hydrogen refueling and a hydrogen internal combustion engine vehicle." Sept 2003 -- GE Global Research, the centralized research organization of General Electric and ECD awarded a grant from the Advanced Technology Program of the U.S. Commerce Department's National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to develop a low-cost, roll-to-roll process for the production of large-area organic electronic devices. The cost of the $13 million, four-year project will be shared among NIST, GE and ECD Ovonics. Sept 2003 -- Converted a Toyota Prius sedan to run on
hydrogen and electricity, storing the hydrogen in a solid metal hydride. June 2003 -- Assumed 100-percent ownership of Texaco Ovonic Fuel Cell Company, a 50/50 joint venture formed in September 2000 with Texaco Energy Systems. The company will be renamed Ovonic Fuel Cell Company and will continue to market its Ovonic regenerative fuel cell technology for both static and transportation applications. May 2003 -- Agreements with N.V. Bekaert S.A. to acquire all of Bekaerts's interests in the photovoltaic joint ventures United Solar Systems Corporation and Bekaert ECD Solar Systems, LLC established in 2000 by ECD and Bekaert to manufacture, market and sell PV products and systems. Nov 2002 -- Texaco Ovonic Battery Systems broke ground for a new multimillion-dollar battery production facility in Springboro, Ohio. The Springboro plant, at 170,000 square feet and with new automated manufacturing equipment, is more than twice the size of the current production facility and is expected to double the production capacity of advanced Texaco Ovonic Battery nickel metal hydride (NiMH) batteries. Sept 2001 -- Moves its base of operations to Rochester Hills, Mich., from nearby Troy.
