CFCL was established in 1992 by a research consortium of 5 players - Commonwealth Scientific & Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), Pacific Power, BHP, Strategic Industry Research Foundation (SIRF) and Energy Research and Development Corporation (ERDC). The technology came out of CSIRO. The current CEO, Dr Bruce Godfrey. was originally, the ERDC member on the Board of CFCL. In 1999, CFCL became a commercial company, and the major and active shareholders are Metasource (a subsidiary of Woodside Energy) and Energex. CFCL employs more than 150 staff, many of them engineers, scientists and technicians. CFCL developes planar (flat plate) Solid Oxide Fuel Cell technology that converts hydrocarbon fuels into electricity without combustion. It sees numerous future applications for SOFC technology in the distributed generation and domestic heating sectors. CFCL is in the process of developing demonstration systems it plans to commercialise via partnerships to manufacture fuel cell stacks and via those for the production of various other systems applications. CFCL has over 11 years of experience in SOFC technology. It was funded initially by Australian and New Zealand energy companies, government agencies, and investors from Germany and Japan.
