Ballard Power Systems Inc. was founded in 1979 under the name Ballard Research Inc. to conduct research and development in high-energy lithium batteries. In 1983, Ballard began developing proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells. Today it manufactures pre-commercial prototype PEM fuel cells for for cars, buses, buildings, and portable products. It also offers electric drives for fuel cell and other vehicles, power conversion products, and is a Tier 1 automotive supplier of friction materials for power train components.

Ballard is working with many of the world's leading auto manufacturers to develop fuel cell vehicles, includiong buses, automobiles, and trucks using Ballard® fuel cells, fuel cell engines, and electric drives to form complete fuel cell power trains. Honda, Daimler-Chrysler, Ford, Mitsubishi, and Mercedes-Benz all use Ballard fuel cells to power their FCVs. Ford and Daimler Chrysler own about 19% and 17% of Ballard respectively.

Ballard manufactures fuel cell modules, fuel cell engines, subsystems and components for a variety of applications. It produces electric drives for fuel cell and other electric vehicles and electric drive components including DC/DC converters and high voltage auxiliary motor drives. Ballard also develops complete fuel cell power trains that combine its fuel cell engines with electric drives. It also developes power electronics that can convert power generated by photovoltaics, fuel cells, microturbines and other distributed generation applications. Its carbon fiber products are used in automotive and fuel cell applications. They include gas diffusion layers used in PEM fuel cells and friction materials for automotive use.
