Honda on Fuel Cell Vehicles

Source: Yuji Kawaguchi, Senior Chief Engineer at Honda

In a recent interview, Kawaguchi had this to say about Honda's fuel cell future:

Honda will have a limited number of fuel cell vehicles on the road in 2010, with widespread commercial availability expected by 2016.

The biggest hurdle is cost reduction. Honda is employing new materials and reducing the number of parts. Volume production will be possible when Honda reduces the current vehicle cost ten times. Presently, FCVs have too many exclusive parts. More shared parts with conventional vehicles are needed.

Southern California, with its Hydrogen Highway and refineries to produce hydrogen for fueling stations, is a likely first market arena.

He is hybrids and natural gas vehicles as a positive bridge to fuel cell vehicles.

We need more cooperation from governments in producing infratstructure and generating public awareness of the possibilities of the hydrogen economy.

Honda is developing a fuel cell scooter it hopes to have on the road in 2009.
